THE LEAD 

Extended Downtime Tomorrow - 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. PT 

Magic Online will be down for scheduled maintenance tomorrow, September 2, on an extended schedule from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. PT (15:00-20:00 UTC). This is to support hardware upgrades to the game servers. Please watch our Discord, BlueSky, and other social channels for live updates about our return. 

Here are the changes to our event schedule tomorrow (all times PT): 

• The 5 a.m. Pauper Challenge will be canceled 
• The 9 a.m. Modern Challenge will be dropped down to 32 level and started 30-45 minutes after we return 
• The 2 p.m. Legacy Challenge will be rescheduled to begin 60 minutes after the Modern Challenge 

Magic: The Gathering® | The Hobbit™ Draft League Extended 

By popular demand, the current set's Draft League is being extended by two weeks – it is now slated to end on Wednesday, September 16 at 10 a.m. PT (17:00 UTC).  

The validity of the Draft Entry Tokens found within the HOB Draft Bundle have also been extended to September 16!  

Vintage Cube League Continues 

Check out Chris Wolf’s article for the latest list and archetype shake-ups with Magic: The Gathering® | The Hobbit™. 

The Vintage Cube League is on now with the usual entry options of 10 Event Tickets or 100 Play Points. The League has been extended to a fifth week, now ending with the September 23 downtime! 

Single-elimination play is also available. You can always view the current Vintage Cube list on this page. 

As usual, we have a Vintage Cube Bundle for $27 USD. The Bundle includes 3 Vintage Cube Draft Tokens plus this set’s two exclusive Bundle avatars featuring premium foil treatments – Gandalf, Goblins’ Bane and Smaug, Wicked Wurm! 

Remember to use the Tokens in the League by downtime on September 23 – they will be cleared from accounts at that time and are non-refundable. 

PREMIER PLAY 

Ten Regional Championship Invitations Up for Grabs This Weekend! 

It’s a bank holiday weekend in many places around the world, so Magic Online has a long weekend of events that can get you into the next available round of tabletop Regional Championships! We will also have your only two chances to compete in high-level Limited play with Magic: The Gathering® | The Hobbit™. 

First up this Saturday, September 5 is a Limited RC Qualifier at a special start time of 2 p.m. PT (21:00 UTC). This event features HOB Sealed Deck with Top 8 Draft. 

Next, on Sunday, September 6, we have a Pioneer RC Super Qualifier at the more conventional 7 a.m. PT (14:00 UTC) start time. 

Finally, on Monday, September 7 (Labor Day in the U.S.), a Limited RC Super Qualifier begins at 7 a.m. PT. It also features the newest set.

RC Qualifier events only take 40 Season 3 Qualifier Points as an entry option, pay out prizes to Top 64, and send the Top 2 finishers to the January-February RC in their home regions.  

RC Super Qualifiers can be joined with 40 Event Tickets, 400 Play Points, or 40 Season 3 Qualifier Points. The Top 4 finishers in each event advance to the RC and prizes go down to 128th place!

EVENT UPDATES 

Pack Wars Alara Block Starts Tomorrow 

Pack Wars – the Magic Online space for Mini-Master – rolls on. Our meandering adventure across the multiverse continues with a trip to the original sharded plane of Alara. 

The idea is simple – crack a pack, add 2 of each basic land, and play a game. In the Keeper League, you then crack another pack, edit your deck, play a game ... and keep going until you have opened 4 packs and played 4 games!  

This Keeper League is easy – 4 packs + 4 games (plus prizes if you do well) for just 4 Event Tickets or 40 Play Points! The pack order for this event is Shards of Alara, then Conflux, followed by Alara Reborn, and finishing with another booster from Shards of Alara.

Alternate Play Schedule 

Here’s a look at the schedule of events coming up. Each description mentions if the Draft is Phantom – cards won’t be added to players’ collections in Phantom events. All transitions take place at 10:00 a.m. PT unless otherwise noted.  

• Now through September 23 – Vintage Cube draft league returns for a summer run that supports the MOCS Showcase broadcast on September 20. (Phantom) 

• September 23-29 – To finish off HOB season, we’re continuing our mash-up series by combining LTR and HOB – it’s The Lord of the Rings™ “Block” Sealed. (4 LTR & 2 HOB packs - Keeper) 

When Do Vintage Cube Leagues Return? 

• Through September 23 – HOB Update to support MOCS Showcase

Combo Improvements Now Live 

We're excited to debut some quality-of-life enhancements for combo players. Changes have been made with speeding up both CEDH play and well as long-standing combos in 60-card decks!  

With a little setup using existing yields/auto-choices and new menu options, you can achieve max efficiency: 

• Making Treasure over and over and don’t care what color mana it produces? Get it down to 1 click per Treasure.
• Splinter Twin and Pestermite? 1 click per loop (2 for Deceiver Exarch). 
• Two creatures that can blink each other and a creature that drains when a creature enters/leaves play? 1 click per loop. 
• Melira Combo? 2 clicks per loop. 
• Legacy Bomberman (Auriok Salvagers/Lion’s Eye Diamond)? A little better - 6 clicks per loop. 
• And so much more ...
