Magic: The Gathering® | The Hobbit™ Now in Limited Scheduled Events

- Phantom Sealed Trials, Limited Preliminaries, and Limited Challenges will use this set as well.

SCHEDULED EVENTS REVAMP
Shakeup of Mid-Level Events Takes Effect Tomorrow
Over the last several months, we've been thinking through ways to get additional engagement in our mid-level Scheduled Events – Challenges, Preliminaries, and Trials.
We've drawn several conclusions:
- Constructed Preliminaries never fired, except sometimes in Modern.
- The intended audience of these events was for grinders who prioritized amassing QPs in batches.
- We want something different for this section of our audience.
- Most of our Challenges and Trials were doing well, but about 20% of them either failed to fire (disappointing those signing up) or fired near the minimum player count (too rich in expected value).
- This was particularly true in our offerings at less popular times or in less popular formats.
- There was a name mismatch with some of the events – some Trials had a Top 8 and some didn’t, Limited Challenges didn’t have a Top 8, but all other Challenges did.
So, here's what we have as the new lineup for mid-level events starting tomorrow - you can visit this page for the full detailed rundown.
New - Gold Constructed Single-Elim Queues
Our replacement for Preliminaries is a set of 8-player, on-demand, single-elimination Gold queues! These will be available for each of the in-season MOCS formats (currently Modern, Standard, Legacy, and Pioneer) as well as Pauper.
The entry options are 15 Event Tickets or 150 Play Points. Think of them as 8-4's for Constructed:
- 1st – 300 Play Points, 8 Treasure Chests, and 8 QPs
- 2nd – 200 Play Points, 4 Treasure Chests, and 4 QPs
- 3rd-4th – 100 Play Points
The Gold Queues are a step up in difficulty from Leagues but don't require as much of a time commitment as Scheduled Events.
New – Limited Challenges with Top 8 Draft
The six-rounds-and-stop structure of Limited Challenges hasn't proved popular, so we are switching to the more beloved Swiss plus Top 8 starting this week. Prizes have been rejiggered as well – check out the full slate here.
New – Challenges in Four Sizes
We've streamlined the naming of our Scheduled Events - all Challenges will feature a Top 8 Playoff and provide a full set of the latest expansion to the winner, no matter the event size!
Going forward, the name of the Challenge represents the number of players who receive prizes. It no longer refers to the minimum player count needed to fire. Here's how that will work:

*44 will be the minimum for Limited, Legacy, Pioneer, Premodern, and Vintage Challenge 32 events. 48 will be the minimum for Modern, Pauper, and Standard Challenge 32 events.
The raised minimum player counts will not matter for about 80% of the current Challenge schedule. But there may be times when a Challenge won't fire. If that happens, the event will drop down a level starting the following week unless there's an underlying reason for it (large paper events, downtimes, etc).
We will continue to monitor time slots and look to promote events up a level when we see a sustained audience.
New – Weekly Schedule: More Legacy, Pauper & Premodern
To catch up with the growth in League play for many older formats, we've added Challenges early in the week – here's the new schedule!
Pauper will have Challenge 32 events every single day, while Legacy bumps up to 6 days a week, and Premodern will fire on 5 days.
In all, we'll start with 40 Challenges at the 32 level or higher each week, spread more evenly across the week than before. We've preserved the biggest events in their existing time slots with a couple shifting 30-60 minutes in either direction.
Additionally, we've added Challenge 16 events at lower-play hours that align with APAC evening and Europe's morning to better serve those audiences.
We look forward to seeing the new schedule in action and gathering groups of players for big events - a Magic Online specialty!

Combo Improvements Now Live
We're excited to debut some quality-of-life enhancements for combo players. Changes have been made with speeding up both CEDH play and well as long-standing combos in 60-card decks!
With a little setup using existing yields/auto-choices and new menu options, you can achieve max efficiency:
- Making Treasure over and over and don’t care what color mana it produces? Get it down to 1 click per Treasure.
- Splinter Twin and Pestermite? 1 click per loop (2 for Deceiver Exarch).
- Two creatures that can blink each other and a creature that drains when a creature enters/leaves play? 1 click per loop.
- Melira Combo? 2 clicks per loop.
- Legacy Bomberman (Auriok Salvagers/Lion’s Eye Diamond)? A little better - 6 clicks per loop.
- And so much more ...
What manner of digital sorcery is this? Find out in this article on MTGO.com for all the details.
