Vintage Cube Update for Lorwyn Eclipsed

Posted on Jan 23, 2026

By Chris Wolf

The next round of Cube League is just around the corner, starting next Wednesday, January 28 at 10 a.m. PT and running for four weeks! Here’s Chris to give you the lowdown on the changes ...

Hello, Cube enthusiasts! We are back with another update to the Magic Online Vintage Cube with the release of Lorwyn Eclipsed and this is going to be a fun one. Lorwyn is one of the favorite planes for a lot of players and we have been liking what we’re seeing it bring to the cubing world. Let's dig right in ...

The Madness Continues

Moonshadow Iron-Shield Elf Twilight Diviner Formidable Speaker

We feel like the madness archetype has landed really well this season. A lot of you expressed your enjoyment of this archetype in general to our Cube designer Chris directly, as well as on various forums and platforms. So we’re going to continue its run and bringing in the cards from Lorwyn Eclipsed that make sense with it.

Moonshadow works well with discarding, although not with Madness directly – that discards straight to exile. Usually, though, you’ll be discarding a lot and not all of those cards are going to have Madness, so we feel like it’ll do a fine job. Iron-Shield Elf is another discard outlet that is able to protect itself on both offense and defense.

Twilight Diviner is one of those cards that just has incredible potential while boasting a reasonable floor, and we’re excited to see it copy everything from Vengevine to Archon of Cruelty. Formidable Speaker feels like (and actually is) a card specifically made for Cube and we’re looking forward to seeing it in action, particularly with the built-in Survival of the Fittest activation.

Aristocrats Unleashed

Bitterbloom Bearer Bitterblossom Ophiomancer Phyrexian Tower

Black as a color has seen the lowest number of changes over the past couple of years and we felt like it was overdue for a fresh feeling. Luckily, Lorwyn Eclipsed brought us Bitterbloom Bearer and we believe that sweet new printings are always a great excuse to bring back a couple of old favorites. The sacrifice theme in particular is one we’ve been looking at for a while with recent printings like Phoenix Fleet Airship and Sephiroth, Fabled SOLDIER, so we’ve hit the “critical mass”-stage to finally re-introduce it to the Magic Online Vintage Cube.

Sacrifice, or “Aristocrats” as it’s often referred to in Magic: The Gathering lingo, is an iconic archetype that is widely known and loved, but we’d like to give you a general rundown regardless.

At its core, this archetype is trying to flood the board with a steady stream of cheap and efficient threats that can chip away at your opponent’s life-total and get sacrificed for value later. The keys to making this works are generally divided into “fodder”, “enablers” and “payoffs”.

Forsaken Miner Bloodghast Jadar, Ghoulcaller of Nephalia

These, alongside Bitterbloom Bearer, Bitterblossom and Ophiomancer provide you with that steady stream of threats, either by being recursive or making expendable tokens every turn.

Carrion Feeder Umbral Collar Zealot Yawgmoth, Thran Physician

This suite of enablers, alongside Goblin Bombardment and the like, allows you to sacrifice them for some minor effect that can quickly compound, especially when paired with one of the following payoffs.

Marionette Apprentice Phoenix Fleet Airship Obsessive Pursuit Mayhem Devil

Pieces of the Puzzle

This is where the archetype can really kick into overdrive and overwhelm their opponents, whether it’s a multiplying army of 4/4 flyers, or gunning down the opposition’s board and life total. Generally speaking, we’re looking at an Aggro deck with a synergistic element, but you can also combo your opponents out directly.

Gravecrawler Warren Soultrader Sephiroth, Fabled SOLDIER

This combo, when assembled, allows you to drain away all of your opponent’s life in one turn! Sacrifice Gravecrawler to Warren Soultrader’s ability, generating a Treasure token and draining your opponent for 1 with Sephiroth’s ability. You can then recast Gravecrawler with the mana from the Treasure, because Warren Soultrader happens to be a Zombie, and repeat. There are several combinations that make this strategy work, such as Forsaken Miner with either Sephiroth or Mayhem Devil, because both of those commit crimes. If you have a high enough life total, you can also substitute Marionette Apprentice or The Meathook Massacre for Sephiroth.

Murderous Redcap Kitchen Finks Yevon Acolyte Celes, Rune Knight

In addition to all of that, we also added the storied Persist combo, where the -1/-1 counters from Persist are cancelled out by +1/+1 counters. This allows you to infinitely sacrifice your Murderous Redcap to ping your opponents to death, or Kitchen Finks to gain infinite life (or also ping them to death if paired with Goblin Bombardment, for example).

The particular boon about adding this archetype now is its overlap with the discard and graveyard themes, which makes each individual card less narrow. Carrion Feeder is notorious for convoking out Hogaak, Arisen Necropolis while protecting it from getting exiled, and Gravecrawler is great at recurring Vengevine from your graveyard. Bloodghast loves to get discarded to Bazaar of Baghdad and Survival of the Fittest and getting milled over by Satyr Wayfinder.

Tokens for Days

Bristlebane Battler Sandstorm Salvagers Caldaia Guardian Sanguine Evangelist

With Shelinda returning to support the Persist combo, the tokens synergy space opens up once again. Bristlebane Battler is a great pay-off for that archetype, while the sacrifice theme also introduces a bunch of token generators. Caldaia Guardian incidentally also works well with the sacrifice theme and the new set's Evoke Elementals, which you’ll find in the Changelist section below the article. This is very much a minor subtheme that has both existed for a while and is getting a slight boost this iteration, thus it’s very much worth mentioning.

Alright, we've covered what we’ve added, so now let’s talk about how we made room for all of these:

Departing from the Lands

Crop Rotation Exploration Dark Depths Thespian’s Stage

While Lands is an iconic part of Eternal gameplay – always a good reason to include it in Vintage Cube – Dark Depths and company haven’t received the most love recently. That, plus the fact that we’ve been pushing the Landfall-theme since the introduction of Icetill Explorer, is a good reason to give this archetype a break for a little while. You’ll still find powerful combos including Baloth Prime and Titania, Protector of Argoth – once again bolstered by Greater Gargadon, which also works with the sacrifice theme. There’s also various shenanigans involving Strip Mine in the Cube, but we’re definitely reducing the amount of support for that archetype overall this iteration.

Feel free to hop on to our Discord and let us know how you feel about these changes and check out our detailed changelist with design comments below. We wish y’all a very happy new year and as always: Happy Cubing!

Changelist and Design Comments

Color In Color Out Design Comment

White

Kinscaer Sentry

White

Ademi of the Silkchutes

Ademi did nothing to offend us, but we don't want to over-support the well-saturated white aggro strategies. Kinscaer Sentry has a great floor for a white 2-drop and an incredibly high ceiling, so watch out for that!

White

Sanguine Evangelist

White

Ranger-Captain of Eos

Sanguine Evangelist gets priority over Ranger-Captain this iteration for being more synergistic with the tokens theme, despite the Captain having just received an upgrade with Figure of Fable. So he might return sooner than later.

White

Sevinne's Reclamation

White

Descendant of Storms

Sevinne's Reclamation is a niche card that typically doesn't see the most amount of play but can really shine in specific scenarios. Taking a white slot away from strictly aggressive decks is totally fine with us, especially since those decks frequently see new printings added to their rosters.

Blue

Glen Elendra Guardian

Blue

Mockingbird

It’s a new take on the classic Glen Elendra Archmage, which powered out of Vintage Cube a while ago. Having flash makes the Guardian very interesting indeed and we're excited to take it for a spin!

Blue

Loch Mare

Blue

Katara, Waterbending Master

The "instants matter" sub-theme Katara and Fire Nation Occupation introduced last season was a fun niche, but ultimately not consistently strong enough to gain a permanent slot. Loch Mare, on the other hand, is a contender for evergreen status as a card-drawing and creature-stunning machine that - once done - leaves a pretty sizeable body behind. Consider us excited for this one!

Black

Bitterbloom Bearer

Black

Exhume

These days, Exhume is restricted to very dedicated reanimator shells and even there you'd prefer something else most of the time. It's a classic and nostalgic card, so it will return, but for now it's going to make room for "Bitterblossom on a stick", which you can read about in the article above.

Black

Bitterblossom

Black

Wishclaw Talisman

We are delighted to have a former staple return for a featured archetype this season. We've been shaving from "spell-centered-combo" in favor of "creature-centered-combo", so we believe it's a good time to give Wishclaw Talisman a little break.

Black

Bloodghast

Black

Vampire Hexmage

Vampire Hexmage is making its exit together with the Dark Depths combo, which you can read about in the article above.

Black

Carrion Feeder

Black

Cecil, Dark Knight

Cecil remains a solid performer but nothing out of the ordinary, and black slots are in high demand this iteration, so we're swapping it out to support the sacrifice-theme.

Black

Forsaken Miner

Green

Crop Rotation

Part of the influx of black means that we are re-allocating slots to it from other colors. Crop Rotation can be a good tool to find your Bazaar of Baghdad or Strip Mine consistently, but ultimately it doesn't have enough usecases in the Cube without Dark Depths. So it’s taking a break with that entire package.

Black

Gravecrawler

Black

Concealing Curtains

The Curtains have gotten a bit dusty over the past year or so, which is why we're willing to give it a break in favor of a central combo-piece for Aristocrats.

Black

Iron-Shield Elf

Red

Party Thrasher

We already talked about the incoming discard Elf in the article above, which will replace Party Thrasher to fill a similar role.

Black

Jadar, Ghoulcaller of Nephalia

Black

Caustic Bronco

Caustic Bronco remains a solid option of aggressive-leaning black shells, but we wanted to lean harder into sacrifice this time with Jadar. You can expect the Mount to be back pretty quickly though.

Black

Marionette Apprentice

Black

Kitesail Freebooter

The Freebooter was mainly a nod to the Dimir Ninja sub-theme, so we're sacrificing it for a lovely aristocrat.

Black

Moonshadow

Black

Bloodchief's Thirst

The article already talks about Moonshadow working with both the discard and sacrifice themes, potentially growing to huge proportions for only a single mana investment. Bloodchief's Thirst remains solid, but had to make way for slot considerations.

Black

Obsessive Pursuit

Black

Fire Nation Occupation

Obsessive Pursuit is a card we've been eyeing since its release, and now is the perfect time to try it with the sacrifice theme maximizing its potential. If it doesn't impress here, it likely never will.

Black

Ophiomancer

Black

Preacher of the Schism

Preacher has been a very serviceable middle-of-the-pack kind of card since its inception. This time, a classic in Ophiomancer gets to make a return alongside the sacrifice-theme.

Black

Phoenix Fleet Airship

Blue

Paradoxical Outcome

Paradoxical Outcome can be one of Cube's peak experiences, but also works out very rarely, which is why we are giving it a break for now. Phoenix Fleet Airship is a relatively new and exciting card that works well with the sacrifice theme.

Black

Phyrexian Tower

Multicolor

Talon Gates of Madara

Talon Gates can still perform some nice tricks with Uro, but its best use case remains a landfall-heavy theme and ways to tutor it at instant speed. We'll let it ride the bench and bring in Phyrexian Tower to support the sacrifice theme.

Black

Sephiroth, Fabled SOLDIER

Green

Earthbender Ascension

We tried Sephiroth before and it definitely fell short without the right synergies present and black not being very creature-centric in the past. A lot of that changes this iteration, so we expect good things from it this time!

Black

Stitcher's Supplier

Green

Exploration

With Hogaak shells gaining a lot more appeal last iteration and Stitcher's Supplier bridging the gap between that strategy and the sacrifice-theme very well, we are bringing it back for another run.

Black

The Meathook Massacre

Black

Damnation

We liked what Damnation had to offer last time and will likely be back in the near future. But with The Meathook Massacre doubling as a synergy piece for aristocrats and a board-wipe for control decks, it's getting the preferential treatment this time.

Black

Twilight Diviner

Colorless

Monument to Endurance

Twilight Diviner has a tremendous ceiling … just think of doubling up on a reanimated Archon of Cruelty. In this iteration specifically, it boasts a large supporting cast with cards like Gravecrawler, Bloodghast, and Vengevine. The Monument was a nice experiment to run which ultimately fell a little flat.

Black

Umbral Collar Zealot

Red

Cam and Farrik, Havoc Duo

Cam and Farrik, Havoc Duo was an interesting test case with the discard stuff, but it fell short even in those shells. So we're swapping it out for a sacrifice enabler in support of this iteration's main theme.

Black

Warren Soultrader

Multicolor

Twisted Landscape

Warren Soultrader is the centerpiece of one of sacrifice's infinite combos. Read all about it in the article above.

Black

Yawgmoth, Thran Physician

Black

Baleful Mastery

Yawgmoth represents a great enabler and payoff for the sacrifice theme, so we expect a triumphant return. Baleful Mastery is the single source for black decks to exile a creature, which is an important tool in general. At the same time though, it's often not very desirable for players to main deck, so we're okay to bench it for a season at least.

Red

Greater Gargadon

Red

Monstrous Rage

We recently tried Greater Gargadon in support of Baloth Prime and Titania, Protector of Argoth. Those two alone didn't warrant a permanent slot for it, but with the sacrifice theme, we believe there to be enough good applications for a suspended Beast.

Red

Hexing Squelcher

Red

Grim Lavamancer

Hexing Squelcher looks like a great addition for aggressive red shells, turning off counterspells and making removal very costly for your opponents.

Red

Sear

Red

Sundering Eruption

Sear is one of those great bread-and-butter cards that we expect to have good staying power. Four damage is a key number to hit a lot of threats in the Cube, and we think paying two mana for that is reasonable.

Red

Spiked Corridor // Torture Pit

Multicolor

Goben, Gene-Splice Savant

We previously featured Spiked Corridor in combination with Goblin Bombardment, where it represents both fodder and payoff on a single card ... so it returns.

Green

Bristlebane Battler

Green

Sazh's Chocobo

The Battler is mentioned above with the tokens sub-theme and we are very excited for it.

Green

Caldaia Guardian

Green

Courser of Kruphix

We first tried Caldaia Guardian in the original No Holds Barred Cube where admittedly it fell a little short. That said, our regular Vintage Cube is much more relaxed in terms of power level, which is why we think it's a great fit. Courser of Kruphix heads to the sideline alongside some of the other Landfall cards.

Green

Formidable Speaker

Green

Tifa Lockhart

The Speaker's praise has already been sung above and it's replacing Tifa, part of the group of Landfall cards going out this iteration to make room for new archetypes.

Green

Mutable Explorer

Green

Great Divide Guide

Mutable Explorer has some Landfall synergies, but we expect it to be a decent staple card for Green. It both ramps you into Otharri and gives you another way to bring it back in your Naya midrange decks. And just look at that art!

Green

Sandstorm Salvager

Green

The Scouring Stormsoul

Sandstorm Salvagers is coming back to support a minor tokens sub-theme.

Golgari

Alpha Deathclaw

Black

Grave Titan

The fact that black is getting a huge influx of cards this iteration and that Grave Titan has seen better days led us to bench it for a season and replace it with a similar Tier 2 Reanimation threat that doubles as a Natural Order target.

Gruul

Vibrance

Red

Goldspan Dragon

As mentioned with Emptiness, we really like this card design. Vibrance can kill things, fetch for a Strip Mine in your Wrenn and Six deck, or do both and provide a decent body to boot. Goldspan did nothing wrong, but card slots are always in short supply.

Izzet

Third Path Iconoclast

Izzet

Pinnacle Emissary

As alluded to when we made this swap, Pinnacle Emissary proved much narrower than Third Path Iconoclast, so we're swapping them once again.

Orzhov

Emptiness

Colorless

Crucible of Worlds

We are really big fans of such evocative card designs for Cube. Even though it could well be that they turn out not quite good enough, the flexibility these new Evoke Elementals supply is not to be taken lightly.

Rakdos

Mayhem Devil

Colorless

Dark Depths

You can read all about these two in the article above.

Rakdos

Murderous Redcap

Colorless

Thespian's Stage

It's been a while since Murderous Redcap saw play in the Magic Online Vintage Cube, and we are happy to see it return as part of a very specific combo which you can read about up above.

Selesnya

Figure of Fable

Green

Elvish Reclaimer

Look! It's Figure of Destiny. No, it's Hexdrinker. Well, maybe it's both! Either way, we are excited for it.

Selesnya

Kitchen Finks

Selesnya

Knight of the Reliquary

Kitchen Finks is part of the persist combo as mentioned in the article above. But full disclosure: we believe this one will outperform expectations as a generic "good card". Knight of the Reliquary is primarily a "Lands" card and is getting trimmed with that archetype this time.

Selesnya

Shelinda, Yevon Acolyte

Selesnya

Arwen, Mortal Queen

Shelinda complements both a minor tokens theme and the persist combo this iteration, which is why we're giving it priority over the objectively better card in Arwen.

Simic

Tam, Mindful First-Year

Colorless

Mutagenic Growth

Tam is a nice twist on Mother/Giver of Runes for blue and/or green. Even if it's not quite as powerful as the white ones, just having an effect like this can be huge. It combines very well with Nadu, Winged Wisdom, which is one of green's primary appeals these days.

Simic

Wistfulness

Multicolor

Bountiful Landscape

We also particularly like the green Evoke Elementals, as green has the most incidental access to different color combinations. Exiling artifacts can also be pretty relevant these days between The One Ring, Blightsteel Colossus, and various recursive elements.

Multicolor

Celes, Rune Knight

Multicolor

Sheltering Landscape

Celes, Rune Knight is coming in to support the persist combo while representing a very reasonable card at face-value that also happens to work with the discard theme. The Landscapes are taking a hiatus this time together with a lot of the Landfall-themed cards.

Colorless

Myr Battlesphere

Colorless

The Endstone

The Endstone was a fun experiment that performed as we hoped as a niche combo card, We'll replace it with the ol' Battleball that some of you didn't like to see leave just yet.
