Vintage Cube League (Including the Bundle) Returns Next Week – Article This Friday

The Vintage Cube League begins again next Wednesday, August 19 at 10 a.m. PT (17:00 UTC) with the usual entry options of 10 Event Tickets or 100 Play Points. Single-elimination play will switch over to the new iteration of the Cube at that time. You can always view the current Vintage Cube list on this page.

As usual, we will be offering a Vintage Cube Bundle for $27 USD starting next week. The Bundle includes 3 Vintage Cube Draft Tokens plus this set’s two exclusive Bundle avatars featuring premium foil treatments – Gandalf, Goblins’ Bane and Smaug, Wicked Wurm!

Banned & Restricted Update

Changes to the Banned & Restricted list announced today by Wizards of the Coast have been implemented on Magic Online. These include:

• Badgermole Cube, Gran-Gran, and Stormchaser’s Talent banned in Standard
• The Fantasticar banned in Legacy and restricted in Vintage

The Lord of the Rings Online-Magic Online Cross Promotion

Our sister game here at Daybreak, The Lord of the Rings Online (or LOTRO for short), is offering a special limited-time promotion for fans of Magic Online to check out their game!

Starting tomorrow, you can download the game client at lotro.com, create an account, and input code LOTROMTGO2026 into the LOTRO Store tab to receive the following benefits:

Congratulations to MOCS Season 2 Showcase Qualifying Players!

After months of top competition and a three-weekend gauntlet of qualifying tournaments, 8 players have emerged to contest the next MOCS Showcase in September! Congratulations to these players:

Modern RC Super Qualifier Saturday

A new tabletop Regional Championship qualifying season has arrived. Your first chance to score an invite to the first round of RCs in 2027 will be this weekend!

A Modern RC Super Qualifier starts at 7 a.m. PT (14:00 UTC) this Saturday, August 15.

Join this event with 40 Event Tickets, 400 Play Points, or 40 Season 3 Qualifier Points. The Top 4 finishers will earn those RC seats in January-February 2027, and prizes pay down to 128^th place!

NRG Series MTGO Showdown This Sunday – MSH Limited, Cash for Top 32!

Magic Online is partnering with Nerd Rage Gaming to host a digital qualifying series for the tabletop NRG Series Championship!

The NRG Series MTGO Showdown begins on Sunday, August 16 at 10 a.m. PT (17:00 UTC) and features Magic: The Gathering® | Marvel Super Heroes Sealed Deck with Top 8 Draft.

A total of $5,000 in cash will be paid out to the Top 32. The event’s winner will take home $1,200 and qualify for the season-ending Championship tournament in Buffalo Grove, Illinois in December that features 24 players and a $35,000 prize pool.

This is also the third of four planned tournaments in 2026 that count towards NRG’s digital leaderboard. In all, six players (4 event winners & 2 Leaderboard) will get seats at the NRG Championship.

IMPORTANT: This event is region-locked – only accounts with Magic Online billing addresses in the US, Canada, or certain European countries (included on the list on this page) may participate.

Registration for this event costs $35 and will only be processed via Attendance will be capped at 384 players with a maximum of 9 rounds of Swiss pairings.

Players will be directed to NRG’s event Discord channel for assistance, including judge calls and any technical issues on the day of the event. For issues with accessing the event in advance after it’s posted in MTGO on August 12, please file a ticket at help.mtgo.com

EVENT UPDATES

Surprise! Urza Block Phantom Elimination Draft - 1 Week Only

Our foray into old-school draft was a hit, so we thought we’d keep the good times rolling by offering another week of Urza Block play!

Urza's Saga, Urza's Legacy, and Urza's Destiny will star in the Urza Block Phantom Elimination Draft beginning immediately after today’s product launch and runs until next Wednesday, August 19^th at 10 a.m. PT. Entry options for this event are the same as Cube – 10 Event Tickets or 100 Play Points.

Prizes are as follows:

• 1^st Place – 240 Play Points, 1 Treasure Chest, and 2 MOCS Season 3 QPs
• 2^nd – 160 Play Points
• 3^rd-4^th – 100 Play Points

Pack Wars – Outlaws of Thunder Junction

Pack Wars – the Magic Online space for Mini-Master – rolls on. Our meandering adventure across the multiverse continues with a trip to the Old West plane of Thunder Junction!

The idea is simple – crack a pack, add 2 of each basic land, and play a game. In the Keeper League, you then crack another pack, edit your deck, play a game ... and keep going until you have opened 4 packs and played 4 games!

This Keeper League is easy – 4 packs + 4 games (plus prizes if you do well) for just 4 Event Tickets or 40 Play Points!

After Outlaws of Thunder Junction rides to the sunset next week, the next set for Pack Wars will be Magic: The Gathering® | The Lord of the Rings: Tales of Middle-earth™.

Alternate Play Schedule

Here’s a look at the schedule of events coming up. Each description mentions if the Draft is Phantom – cards won’t be added to players’ collections in Phantom events. All transitions take place at 10:00 a.m. PT unless otherwise noted.

• August 11-19 – Urza Block Phantom Elimination Draft
• August 19-September 17 – Vintage Cube draft league returns for a summer run that supports the MOCS Showcase broadcast on September 20. (Phantom)
• September 17-23 – We are still considering our option for this week ...
• September 23-29 – To finish off HOB season, we’re continuing our mash-up series by combining LTR and HOB – it’s The Lord of the Rings™ “Block” Sealed. (4 LTR & 2 HOB packs - Keeper)

Combo Improvements Now Live

We're excited to debut some quality-of-life enhancements for combo players. Changes have been made with speeding up both CEDH play and well as long-standing combos in 60-card decks!

With a little setup using existing yields/auto-choices and new menu options, you can achieve max efficiency:

• Making Treasure over and over and don’t care what color mana it produces? Get it down to 1 click per Treasure.
• Splinter Twin and Pestermite? 1 click per loop (2 for Deceiver Exarch).
• Two creatures that can blink each other and a creature that drains when a creature enters/leaves play? 1 click per loop.
• Melira Combo? 2 clicks per loop.
• Legacy Bomberman (Auriok Salvagers/Lion’s Eye Diamond)? A little better - 6 clicks per loop.
• And so much more ...

TODAY'S PATCH NOTES - August 11, 2026

Card Fixes

• Academic Dispute will allow you to Learn if you decline to give the targeted creature reach.
• Bösium Strip will work correctly with split cards.
• New Blood will function as expected given its new implementation and won’t have red borders.
  • Due to long-standing rules engine limitations, New Blood's text-changing ability will not apply.
• Pyre of Heroes will find the proper creature type in the library.

Duel Scene

• Myr Retriever will be able to loop copies of itself in the graveyard when Always Target This Name
• The keybinding for Stop Passing (5 key) has been updated to Clear All Automation
  • It will clear all active auto-yields and always choices (yes/no, mana type, saved targets)
• Right-clicking an object that has Always Choose This options (save targets/mana type) will have sub-menus that can be displayed by hovering over the arrow icon.
  • Left-clicking the object will not change its behavior.

NEXT SCHEDULED DOWNTIME – September 2, 8 a.m. to 1 p.m.

The next scheduled maintenance is Wednesday, September 2 from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. PT (15:00-20:00 UTC). This is to install hardware upgrades for the game.
