Combo Improvements Article Tomorrow!

We're excited to debut some quality-of-life enhancements for combo players with tomorrow's downtime. Changes have been made with speeding up both CEDH play and well as long-standing combos in 60-card decks!

With a little setup using existing yields/auto-choices and new menu options, you can achieve max efficiency:

• Making Treasure over and over and don’t care what color mana it produces? Get it down to 1 click per Treasure.
• Splinter Twin and Pestermite? 1 click per loop (2 for Deceiver Exarch).
• Two creatures that can blink each other and a creature that drains when a creature enters/leaves play? 1 click per loop.
• Melira Combo? 2 clicks per loop.
• Legacy Bomberman (Auriok Salvagers/Lion’s Eye Diamond)? A little better - 6 clicks per loop.
• And so much more ...

MOCS Opens This Weekend – Last Shot at PT Detroit Invite!

We are down to the final weekend of qualification events, and the last chances to score an invitation are in the MOCS Opens this Saturday and Sunday, August 8-9. Leaderboard Points are also on the line as players seek one of two At-Large invites at the end of the postseason.

Featuring Magic: The Gathering® | Marvel Super Heroes Sealed Deck with a Top 8 Draft, this is your opportunity to spike a tournament for a big payoff! Join with 40 Event Tickets or 400 Play Points, and prizes are rewarded to the Top 64.

In addition to reaching the Champions Showcase (with its $50,000 prize pool and two invitations to the 2027 World Championship), the winner of each Showcase Open is invited to Pro Tour Nauctis in Detroit in 2027 plus the Regional Championship round in October-November 2026 feeding that event.

Our intrepid team of Digital Event Coordinators will be on hand inside the game during the Opens to lend a hand if something goes awry. To contact a DEC, click the Chat button in the top-right corner of the Home Scene, choose Create/Join New Chat …, then type in #DEC and press Enter to join the room.

Scheduled Downtime Tomorrow, 9 a.m.-Noon PT 

Magic Online will be offline for scheduled maintenance tomorrow, August 5, from 9 a.m. to 12 noon PT (16:00-19:00 UTC). Be sure to follow our social channels for updates. The 9 a.m. Modern Challenge will be rescheduled at the 64 level 30 minutes after downtime ends.

Streets of New Capenna Commander Decks Available Tomorrow

The three missing decks from the Streets of New Capenna Commander set have been completed and will be ready for purchase in the Store following tomorrow’s downtime. Each deck will sell for $29.99 USD and contains 17 cards that were new to Magic at the time (some have been reprinted since 2020). The decks are:

• Riveteer Rampage – green-red-black
• Bedecked Brokers – white-blue-green
• Obscura Operation – blue-black-white

EVENT UPDATES

Urza Block Draft Starts Tomorrow

Our occasional series of old school drafts rolls on with another classic format.

Urza's Saga, Urza's Legacy, and Urza's Destiny will star in the Urza Block Draft League beginning immediately after today’s downtime. Entry options for this special event are 15 Event Tickets or 150 Play Points. You can also enter with one of each booster and 3 Event Tickets.

Prizes are as follows:

• 3-0 – 150 Play Points, 1 Urza's Saga booster, 1 Urza's Legacy booster, 1 Urza's Destiny booster, and 2 MOCS Season 2 QPs
• 2-1 – 150 Play Points

Pack Wars – Outlaws of Thunder Junction

Pack Wars – the Magic Online space for Mini-Master – rolls on. Our meandering adventure across the multiverse continues with a trip to the Old West plane of Thunder Junction!

The idea is simple – crack a pack, add 2 of each basic land, and play a game. In the Keeper League, you then crack another pack, edit your deck, play a game ... and keep going until you have opened 4 packs and played 4 games!

This Keeper League is easy – 4 packs + 4 games (plus prizes if you do well) for just 4 Event Tickets or 40 Play Points!

Alternate Play Schedule

Here’s a look at the schedule of events coming up. Each description mentions if the Draft is Phantom – cards won’t be added to players’ collections in Phantom events. All transitions take place at 10:00 a.m. PT unless otherwise noted.

• August 5-11 – Our throwback to old draft formats continues with Urza Block Draft. (Keeper)
• August 11-19 – Magic: The Gathering | The Hobbit™ Limited will be front and center for this week. This will be a Pick-One draft experience.
• August 19-September 17 – Vintage Cube draft league returns for a summer run that supports the MOCS Showcase broadcast on September 20. (Phantom)
• September 17-23 – We are still considering our option for this week ...
• September 23-29 – To finish off HOB season, we’re continuing our mash-up series by combining LTR and HOB – it’s The Lord of the Rings™ “Block” Sealed. (4 LTR & 2 HOB packs - Keeper)

When Do Vintage Cube Leagues Return?

• August 19-September 17 – HOB Update to support MOCS Showcase

NRG Series MTGO Showdown August 16 – MSH Limited, Cash for Top 32!

Magic Online is partnering with Nerd Rage Gaming to host a digital qualifying series for the tabletop NRG Series Championship!  

The NRG Series MTGO Showdown begins on Sunday, August 16 at 10 a.m. PT (17:00 UTC) and features Magic: The Gathering® | Marvel Super Heroes Sealed Deck with Top 8 Draft.  

A total of $5,000 in cash will be paid out to the Top 32. The event’s winner will take home $1,200 and qualify for the season-ending Championship tournament in Buffalo Grove, Illinois in December that features 24 players and a $35,000 prize pool.  

This is also the third of four planned tournaments in 2026 that count towards NRG’s digital leaderboard. In all, six players (4 event winners & 2 Leaderboard) will get seats at the NRG Championship. 

IMPORTANT: This event is region-locked – only accounts with Magic Online billing addresses in the US, Canada, or certain European countries (included on the list on this page) may participate.  

Registration for this event costs $35 and will only be processed via NRG’s site. Attendance will be capped at 384 players with a maximum of 9 rounds of Swiss pairings.  

Players will be directed to NRG’s event Discord channel for assistance, including judge calls and any technical issues on the day of the event. For issues with accessing the event in advance after it’s posted in MTGO on August 12, please file a ticket at help.mtgo.com

PATCH NOTES 

Card Fixes

• Animation Module will only display counter types on your permanents instead of all counter types.
• Dargo, the Shipwrecker will correctly not count sacrificed lands toward its cost reduction.
• New Blood has been implemented specially for Magic Online.
  • Due to long-standing rules engine limitations, New Blood's text-changing ability will not apply.
• Nick Fury, Agent of S.H.I.E.L.D.’s ability will correctly put leftover cards on the bottom of the library.
• A number of older cards and abilities (Mindclaw Shaman, BFZ’s Eldrazi processors, Twinning Glass, Master of Predicaments, the Kinship ability) have been reimplemented to work like modern cards.
• Role Reversal will correctly exchange the same permanent type instead of card type (no more Kindred shenanigans).

Collection

• New Blood will be granted to purchasers of the LCC Blood Rites Commander Deck
  • New Blood will replace Captivating Vampire in copies of the deck purchased following downtime.

Duel Scene

• After Karn Liberated restarts the game, players will be able to become the monarch or cast Once Upon a Time for free.
• Overwhelming Splendor will correctly prevent ascend abilities from granting the city’s blessing.
• Modal abilities will be standardized to utilize the same modal choice box as spells.
• Mana floated while other mana with restrictions is in the pool (i.e. The Mightstone and Weakstone; Karolina Dean, Runaway; Hydraulic Helper) will remain separate and not gain those restrictions.

NEXT SCHEDULED DOWNTIME – September 2, 8 a.m. to 1 p.m.

After tomorrow, our next scheduled maintenance is Wednesday, September 2 from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. PT (15:00-20:00 UTC). This is to install hardware upgrades for the game.
