The Magic: The Gathering®–FINAL FANTASY™ Vintage Cube Update

Posted on Jun 27, 2025

Greetings, Cube enthusiasts! Magic: The Gathering®–FINAL FANTASY™ has been a big hit with the Magic community, and we are excited to bring some of the set’s most powerful cards into the Magic Online Vintage Cube starting with a free preview event on Monday, June 30th before the return of Vintage Cube Leagues on July 2nd.

If you know you are going to get a few Magic Online Vintage Cube Leagues in, pick up a Vintage Cube Draft Bundle to snag a discount on three League entries, plus a sweet Vivi Ornitier avatar to boot!

Between the main set and the Commander decks, there were a lot of Magic: The Gathering®–FINAL FANTASY™ cards to consider for inclusion—did Vivi Ornitier make it into the exclusive club that is the Magic Online Vintage Cube 540? Of course.

Let’s take a look at what else made the cut!

Where to Begin?

Starting Town Sleep Magic Suplex

Where else would we begin if not Starting Town? This land might not be the most exciting Vintage Cube candidate from the set, but it is perhaps the most obviously qualified. In the early turns, Starting Town is strictly better than Vintage Cube regulars City of Brass and Mana Confluence, and you would often choose it over the other two in a late game with a dwindling life total. It’s not flashy, but Vintage Cube needs plenty of meat-and-potatoes cards to hold the experience together.

Similarly, while Sleep Magic and Suplex don’t have particularly high ceilings or unique effects, they are solid-rate removal spells, and players will know when they need them and how to use them.

Summoner’s Choice

Summon: Knights of the Round Summon: Bahamut Yuna’s Decision Eureka

Every new Magic set comes with some new mechanics to assess for power and value, and there’s a lot to unpack in the new Saga creatures introduced in Magic: The Gathering®–FINAL FANTASY™. They are both enchantments and creatures, but they are doomed to die after a few turns. They spit out some kind of value each turn until they do, and the mechanic triggers on counters that can have interaction. That’s a lot of moving parts for each one, which gives them a lot of interesting play angles for Vintage Cube.

They work with all the creature-cheating tech you’d expect in a Vintage Cube, and Summon: Knights of the Round and Summon: Bahamut work particularly nicely with such effects. So alongside newly minted Yuna’s Decision, we’re bringing back Eureka. All of which combine really well, not only thematically, but also in terms of Vintage Cube gameplay.

Summon: Yojimbo Summon: Good King Mog XII Summon: Brynhildr Summon: Esper Valigarmanda

We’re also bringing in a few midrange “Summon” options that look good enough for hard casting in Vintage Cube. We have also added Scholar of New Horizons, which combos very well with Sagas by removing lore counters to keep triggering chapters indefinitely each turn and avoiding the end of the story.

Spellslingers

Astrologian’s Planisphere Vivi Ornitier

These two, alongside the recently added Cori-Steel Cutter, synergize together nicely in the fan-favorite Izzet Spellslingers archetype. Astrologian’s Planisphere not only cares about casting spells but also about drawing extra cards, so we’re also bringing back Proft’s Eidetic Memory alongside a new addition in Plagon, Lord of the Beach. These won’t be high picks, but their job is to bridge the gap between several different archetypes in this iteration. Later-pick cards that can slot into multiple archetypes are the glue cards of Limited!

Cori-Steel Cutter Duelist of the Mind Plagon, Lord of the Beach Proft’s Eidetic Memory

Tokens

Shelinda, Yevon Acolyte Hildebrand Manderville Sephiroth, Fabled SOLDIER

Recent addition Securitron Squadron has shown that token-oriented strategies can be quite powerful in the Vintage Cube environment. Magic: The Gathering®–FINAL FANTASY™ has brought two new token-boosting options to the table, while Sephiroth enables the Aristrocrats theme. Importantly, all of them stand reasonably well on their own and aren’t dead cards outside of their primary archetypes.

Well-Equipped

Cloud, Midgar Mercenary Stoneforge Mystic Umezawa’s Jitte Skullclamp

While Cloud, Midgar Mercenary is not quite a second copy of Stoneforge Mystic since he can’t cheat in Kaldra Compleat, his double-trigger ability means that cheaper equipment options will often play better with Cloud than with Stoneforge Mystic. Grab Umezawa’s Jitte and go ham, or put him in a tokens deck with Skullclamp and his floor becomes “2WW: Draw four cards and put a Skullclamp onto the battlefield.”

Finally!

Those are the broad strokes of the changes for this iteration but you can check the changelist below for comments on every new addition. We are excited to bring you the Magic: The Gathering®–FINAL FANTASY™ update to the Magic Online Vintage Cube, and hope you have a blast with it. We look forward to seeing which of the new additions earn a place in the regular rotation. Share your predicitons on X, BlueSky, and Discord, and have a fantastic Cube season!

Changelist

Color In Color Out Design Comment
White Cloud, Midgar Mercenary White Intrepid Advesary While the Magic Online Vintage Cube no longer has any three-mana swords to swing around, the utility Cloud provides with the cheaper equipment available can be even more scary. Doubling triggers on Umezawa’s Jitte will mimic an equipped Sword of This and That quite nicely, and a Skullclamp in the deck turns Cloud into a four-mana installment-plan draw-four! Add Lurrus of the Dream-Den to rinse and repeat.
White Novice Inspector White March of Otherworldly Light March of Otherworldly Light was one of the weaker removal spells in white, and considering we recently added Get Lost into the mix we want to cut it for a second copy of Thraben Inspector to bolster incoming Plagon, Lord of the Beach.
White Scholar of New Horizons White Virtue of Loyalty Scholar of New Horizons makes its Vintage Cube debut thanks to its synergy with the incoming Saga creatures. Fetch up a Plains while keeping your Saga creature around to tell you the same old story each turn! Virtue of Loyalty has been a fine performer that will return again someday.
White Summon: Good King Mog XII White Hero of Bladehold Summon: Good King Mog XII is somewhat reminiscent of the old classic Baneslayer Angel, but he provides multiple bodies and token synergies to boot while being easy splashable.
White Summon: Knights of Round White Ephemerate The Knights of Round will frequently require a "Special Summons" by Reanimation or other ways of cheating big things into play, but they present a rather royal reward if you manage to do so!
White Summon: Yojimbo White Clarion Conqueror Yojimbo deals with a wide variety of permanents, thus being card-neutral even though it must eventually withdraw from the battlefield. A decent-sized body and additional defensive chapters makes this a great fit for just about any midrange or controlling strategy. Clarion Conqueror got there in terms of power level but ended up blanking a little too many strategies to qualify as "fun", so we're going to bench it for now.
Blue Astrologian's Planisphere Blue High Tide The tides are shifting away from the old-school Storm combo part to a more broadly applicable card that you can still pop off with in Astrologian's Planisphere.
Blue Chrome Host Seedshark Blue Mystic Confluence Mystic Confluence did nothing wrong; we consider it a staple of Vintage Cube and it will be back soon. However, we need to take it out this time around while we address an issue related to paying mana tax costs generated by modal spells. The shark comes in to sub as a general value card that also represents some extra support for the "spells matter" archetype.
Blue Duelist of the Mind Blue Floodpits Drowner Duelist of the Mind is coming back in to support the additions of Plagon, Lord of the Beach and Proft's Eidetic Memory, while also working nicely in an Astrologian's Planisphere shell.
Blue Hard Evidence Blue Spyglass Siren Hard Evidence does a better job of being a late-pick cross-archetype glue card than Spyglass Siren in this iteration.
Blue Plagon, Lord of the Beach Blue Stormchaser's Talent This wizardly starfish triggers off a surprising number of creatures—27 to be precise—and that's only counting the one- and two-drops! Plagon, Lord of the Beach has many other nice synergies, such as repeatedly triggering Nadu, Winged Wisdom.
Blue Proft's Eidetic Memory Blue Turnabout Combo is shifting gears a bit, with the mana doublers and associated enablers sitting out this round in favor of better support for some incoming spell strategies around drawing cards and casting noncreature spells.
Blue Sleep Magic Blue Treachery Treachery has been moving in and out of the Cube—firmly past its prime, but not without something to give now and then. Sleep Magic represents cheap removal, which is rare for Blue. This looks like the best printing of this type of effect to date, and thus worthy of a spin in the curation.
Black Cecil, Dark Knight Black Rain of Filth Cecil, Dark Knight offers quite the rate for a 1-drop, but he does come with some risk. However, that risk can also be turned into a positive in decks that can turbo-transform him Death’s Shadow style and never look back. Rain of Filth is a powerful-but-niche combo enabler, which we're pulling back from this iteration, so it departs along with its cousin High Tide.
Black Sephiroth, Fabled SOLDIER Black Qarsi Revenant In this slot, two solid-rate 3-drops switch places. Sephiroth, Fabled SOLDIER is an interesting prospect that functions both as a sacrifice-matters enabler and payoff. While the current curation doesn't lean into creature sacrifice as a theme, Sephiroth looks good enough on its own in any given black deck to come in as a nice option for decks with Goblin Bombardment and other token shenanigans.
Red Gau, Feral Youth Red Bonehoard Dracosaur Gau threatens to snowball in the mold of Laelia, the Blade Reforged. It isn’t difficult to trigger the graveyard-exit clause in the format, and it won’t take many triggers to end the game if the opponent can’t answer his attacks.
Red Summon: Brynhildr Multicolor Golos, Tireless Pilgrim Like Summon: Yojimbo, Summon: Brynhildr replaces itself most of the time, making up for losing it when the saga ends. Granting haste is a big deal here, especially when you're trying to be as aggressive as possible.
Red Summon: Esper Valigarmanda Red Rampaging Raptor Summon: Esper Valigarmanda will almost always trade at least 1-for-1, but comes with an incredibly high ceiling. Casting two spells while generating up to nine mana and attacking for the same over several turns is a great deal.
Red Summon: Kujata Red Glorybringer The Ox can perform similar feats to Glorybringer in turning the tides of battle. At 6 mana, it's a little expensive, but it does end games extremely quickly.
Red Suplex Red Trumpeting Carnosaur While there aren't any trains to Suplex in Vintage Cube, you could argue that Blightsteel Colossus, Kaldra Compleat and The One Ring qualify given how hard and fast they will run you over if you don't deal with them. Now you can!
Red Yuffie, Materia Hunter Red Embereth Shieldbreaker Yuffie, Materia Hunter’s ability to steal your opponent’s Moxen and other powerful artifacts is already great, but the Ninja type line and the equipment clause can lead to some serious blowouts. Consider us excited!
Green Eureka Green Lotus Cobra As mentioned above, Eureka is coming back in to support the addition of the big Summons cards, as well as just about any permanent in the curation that costs seven or more mana and says “enters” in the rules text. Eureka decks are always a high-risk endeavor in Vintage Cube, but therein lies the fun!
Green Force of Vigor Green Heritage Reclamation Heritage Reclamation didn't end up seeing much main deck play despite its versatility, so we're swapping it back for the powerful sideboard option that feels more “Vintage.”
Green Yuna's Decision Multicolor Huatli, Poet of Unity Yuna's Decision bolsters cheating monsters onto the battlefield while also adding some support for the Mono-Green Ramp and Natural Order decks that we are continuing to support in this iteration.
Izzet Vivi Ornitier Izzet Fire // Ice The addition of Vivi Ornitier and Astrologian's Planisphere has us steering combo in a different direction, which indicates that we have high hopes for them. Even if they end up short of expectations on power, we're sure the moments this tiny Wizard can create won’t be short on fun!
Orzhov Hildibrand Manderville Boros General Ferrous Rokiric Token strategies have appreciated in value in recent times, and Hildebrand Manderville looks quite appealing in a token meta. Its perpetual nature also accommodates grindy Orzhov strategies, like Lurrus of the Dream-Den, very nicely. General Ferrous Rokiric is not seeing enough play to warrant a permanent slot, but he represents a fun niche build-around that we expect to revisit in future iterations when the mix is right.
Selesnya Shelinda, Yevon Acolyte Selesnya Brightglass Gearhulk Shelinda and her restless devotion can snowball out of control quickly, both by boosting your lower-powered threats and growing off of the higher-powered ones. Brightglass Gearhulk remains narrow with its heavy mana requirements and is getting a break, but it turned out better than we hoped, so we might bring it back in the future.
Multicolor Sin, Spira's Punishment Multicolor Slimefoot and Squee Sun, Spira's Punishment further adds to this iteration’s increased focus on cheating gigantic threats with “enters” triggers onto the battlefield. Slimefoot and Squee is powerful but also hard to cast, especially since multicolored decks frequently go in the Omnath, Locus of Creation direction.
Multicolor Starting Town Simic Restless Vinestalk Every good Vintage Cube deck starts with a good mana base, and what better place to learn all about it than Starting Town?
Colorless Summon: Bahamut Colorless The Aetherspark Bahamut checks a lot of boxes when it comes to appealing options for cheating into play in Vintage Cube, so we definitely want to give it a try.
Colorless Tangle Wire Colorless Phyrexian Revoker Phyrexian Revoker has lost a step in Vintage Cube, so we're swapping it out for a classic in Tangle Wire, which we feel is set up well to reclaim some of its former glory this time.
