Building a Deck

You build decks in Magic Online in the Collection tab. The Collection tab shows you the number of cards in your collection. Those cards are displayed in the top of the screen. Your deck will display in the bottom of your view.

To get started, click the Add Deck icon in the bottom left of the screen.

A new window will open and ask you to choose a name for the deck and select the format you want to build your deck for. Once you've done that, click OK.

A large set of filters are on the left of the view and will help you find subsets of cards in your collection to add to your deck. Usually, the first filter you want to choose is the Format filter – this will automatically hide cards that are not legal in the format you want to build your deck.

After that – the choice is up to you! You can filter by Set, Color, Type, Subtype, Mana Value, Power, Toughness, or Rarity. You can select multiple filters at a time. Maybe you want to build a mono-blue deck filled with 2-mana Wizards? The filters will help you do that.

To add a card in your collection to your deck, just double click on that card. Or if you want to add multiple copies of a card at once, you can right-click on that card and select “Add 4 to deck.” (if you have less than 4 copies of that card, this option will display accordingly).

You can also sort your deck as you are building it to make it easier to see. Select the Sort option in the title bar of the deck that separates the cards in your collection from the card in your deck, then choose the sort you want to use – typically, “Sort by Mana Value” is best.

Magic Online automatically saves your deck when you leave the Collection scene. So as soon as you're done building your deck – head to the Play Lobby and start battling!

Finding a Game

Magic Online features many play options, but when you're just starting out, you may want to take some time to learn the duel interface in a casual Open Play match. To do this, make sure you've built at least one deck using the process above.

After you've built your deck, click the Constructed button at the top of the screen, then the Format that matches your deck (if you're just using the cards that came with your account, select Standard), then Standard Open Play. Available games will be displayed in the center of the scene. Either select a match to join or click the Join button to get matched with another player.

Open Play matches are single-game matches. If you're ready to step up the competition, the Tournament Practice area features Best-of-Three matches.

Duel Scene

The Duel Scene is where the games of Magic Online take place. Player information can be found on the left side of the screen. The battlefield is in the center of the screen and your hand is be found below the battlefield.

Hovering over cards or right-clicking on them will display a more thorough description, and right-clicking will also often open context menus to allow further interaction. As you need them, various game zones will open to allow you to take actions. You can find more about playing matches in the Basic Client section.

Store Scene

You can buy booster packs, Event Tickets, and other items from the Magic Online store. Like the other areas, filters on the left side of the screen let you find the products you want. Click the Store scene button in the navigation bar, then click the category of item that you would like to view.

Purchases made in the Magic Online store are immediately added to your account. From the Store scene, click the Add to Cart button for the product that you would like to purchase, and it will be added to your cart on the right side of the screen.

You can adjust quantities in the Shopping Cart or click the X button to remove the item from your cart entirely. When you're ready to complete a purchase, enter your payment information in the boxes provided at the bottom of the Shopping Cart pane, then click Proceed to Checkout. Magic Online will use your billing address from your account creation by default, so if you want to change anything you will need to do so in the Account section prior to your purchase or in the Verify Account Settings link at the bottom of the cart. To complete your purchase, you'll need to enter your payment information and confirm your order.

Note: If you choose PayPal as your payment method, a browser window will open to complete the transaction. Please contact Customer Service if you have any questions or concerns about a purchase.

Opening New Product

Whether you purchase new product or win it in a tournament, Sealed items (booster packs, pre-constructed decks, etc.) must be opened to add their contents to your collection.

  • Click the Collection scene button in the navigation bar.
  • In the Filters pane, click the Other Products tab.
  • You can optionally click the Sealed Product check box to show only sealed product in your collection.
  • Right-click the product you want to open, then click Open 1 of These or Open All of These.

Tip: You can use booster packs as part of some tournament entry options or you can trade them to other players, so you may not want to immediately open booster packs.

New Player Modern Gauntlet Decks

If you're new to Magic Online and not very familiar with the breadth of all the formats, this is a great way to sample Modern. Use the New Player points that come with your Magic Online account and jump into the New Player Modern Gauntlet. You'll randomly get one of six possible decks and can play up to three matches where the first player to win twice wins the match.

Make sure you've played some Open Play games first to familiarize yourself with the Magic Online game client. And don't forget to check out our Game Guide for even more information!
